Recommended Book of The Week

This week's book is called, "Little Blog on the Prairie,"by Cathleen Davitt Bell.

Summary:

Thirteen-year-old Genevieve, or Gen, Welsh has no idea what her family is getting in to when they spend the summer at Camp Frontier in Wyoming. Gen, her parents, and her younger brother, Gavin, relenquish all their electronics, toiletries, clothing, and all other modern conveniences to live in a small cabin designed to reflect frontier life in 1890. Three other families live near them, doing the same thing, along with the camp owners and their teenage daughter, Nora. But as Gen learns to churn butter and milk a cow, she also sends texts to her friends back home on the new cell phone her parents promised her if she gives Camp Frontier a chance. One friend turns her texts into a popular blog, and the modern world meets 1890 in surprising, hilarious ways.

Look for this book at your local library and get ready to become a tired, little pioneer out in the wilderness!

Recommended for wilderness lovers, bookworms, bloggers, and texters.

The Brittle Battle For Queen of Hearts Part 1

By M2

Ansley stood there in a dreaming trance, looking at the Valentine Dance poster.

"Ans? Earth to Ansley?" one of Ansley's best friends, Lia Simone called. "C'mon! We just GOTTA go to our seats at the dock. I'm dying to see my Justin!" she said love-struck.

Ansley smiled. "Of course! Only your POPULAR Justin, Kia's POPULAR Cale and my POPULAR Joshie would be on the dock! We ALL are popular!"

Ansley was so caught up on boasting about how popular she was that she hadn't noticed a runaway corn dog stand hurdling toward her.

Luckily, her boyfriend, Josh Dweller, pushed her out of the way. Unfortunately for her, the chili sauce on the cart tipped over, and landed right on her designer, chic, white blouse and splattered a smaller portion on Lia and Kia.

A boy her grade came running over. "Man, my cart!" he exclaimed pulling it upright to it's normal position.

"That's YOUR cart!?" Ansley screeched looking at the disaster on her clothes as the boy nodded. "YOU, YOU GEEK! DO YOU SEE WHAT YOU DID TO MY SHIRT?! THIS IS GENUINE!"

"Look, dork face." Josh reached for a napkin on the cart and tried to help his shrieking girlfriend. "Just take your dumb corn dog cart away, and you are forbidden from coming to the 'popularity dock' ever."

Shame-faced boy picked up his cart, and walked away.

Sound Effects Part 4 - Requested By: ---

Ivy quickly scanned the area. That's what the Gossip Groups were there for, ya know.

She saw the helpless Selene Violet in the corner, Ashton Kent being worshipped by denial populars, Mason Williamson, also a mega popular, flirting with Claire Grae, who, although had a boyfriend, seemed to adore the attention, and soon-to-be all star musician, Nick Vista, playing a few piano notes on his laptop.

Lastly, Ivy couldn't help keep glancing back at Makenzy Norse, the girl she was sure going to be caught up in the Clearest, Clairest Tide of the Popular Ocean.

Makenzy was different; like none other. The drained little girl at home was a confident young woman at school. Her outfit was stunning, but not expensive enough to be as high as Claire. Her shiny brown hair straightened, but the most perfect curls at the end. Her eyes cunning, but the sweetest ever seen.

'This is the final test, the major of majors,' Ivy thought. Makenzy had just grabbed her lunch when she came to a pitchfork in the road divided by the many expensive, chestnut tables.

Makenzy could choose to be a popular, on the left, where Ivy would know she would totally make it in, or, to the right, and sit with the musicians, the actors, the nerds, and the nobodies.

Ivy was sure she would pick left, but wiped her out in surprise when she went right. She took a total detour avoiding eyes, oblivious to stares, and sent her genuine smiles in many directions.

And she sat right next to Selene. The whole cafeteria must have gone quiet; Ivy realized that everyone had been watching Makenzy to make sure she joined the populars.

Everyone had been wrong.

Sound Effects Part 3 - Requested by "Kit Kat"

"Hey, Ash!" Popularity prince Ashton Kent turned to find his girlfriend, (only because of the popularity that comes in) Claire, walk over and literally sit on his lap and claw at his shirt.

"Hey, baby!" Ashton said giving her a kiss. 'Ugh,' he thought, asking himself why he was torturing himself with her.

He saw his long time crush, Selene, make a face of disgust. He would be with her... Just like back in sixth grade where they were best friends... But ever since Claire turned on her, Selene was never able to stand up for herself. And he hated it.

The bell FINALLY rang, and Ms. Sinclair came in with a very red manila folder. He honestly loved Ms. Sinclair and her English class, but would NEVER admit it... Except maybe to Selene...

"Hello, class." Ms. Sinclair gave Claire a stern looking to, and she quickly hopped off Ashton's lap and into her seat. Ms. Sinclair shot him a sympathetic glance, and continued on with class.

"Hello, class"

"Hi, Ms. Sinclair," the class responded.

"It's May now, and I was trying to think of a good idea for a spring show. We never did anything volunteeringly, " Ms. Sinclair gave a very irresponsible student named Gulliver a sideways glance, "So I decided this year our spring show is going to be a TALENT show!!"

A wave of murmurs passed over the class as excitement filled the air. Ashton's stomach lurched; he saw a sparkle of hope in Selene's eye when he looked at her.

That is, until Claire nudged Ashton and made her "You Know What I Want, Just Give it to Me" look and pleaded for Ashton to join her and make a band.

"C'mon, Ash!! If we win, the popularity charts for us will instantly sky rocket!! And we both know you're awesome at the drums! And my voice must be INCREDIBLE!!" Claire whipped out an expensive Juicy Couture hand mirror and worshipped her reflection. "I can already see the headlines-"

"Alright, everybody, settle down!" Ms. Sinclair said, saving Ashton once again. "That will be your lunch time discussion. Now back to English."

The class groaned.

"Hey, don't make me cancel it!!" she warned.

Just a Daydream Part 1 - Me

"No, no, and no!" I shouted, drawing attention as I winced trying to break free of two of my best friends' grips as they tried to haul me into a movie at the theatre. "And for the last time, NO!"

"But you promised!" Whitney whined, tired of my struggling but persistent to keep me where she wanted me.

"Uh, correction! I promised to read the BOOK, while YOU read the first book of the 39 Clues!" I pressed as a look of annoyance crossed her face, for she had known that already.

"Argh! You are watching this movie if it's the last thing I do!"

Maybe it will be, I thought with a scowl.

"Aubrey, pull harder!!" Whitney commanded my quiet, yet bold friend who would normally be on my side.

Aubrey made a weird growling sound at Whitney. "Okay, one, you are not the boss of me!! And two, DON'T YOU THINK I'M TRYING?!" she yelled drawing more attention.

A flash of ash blond hair and an unmistakable bright green ring caught my eye.

"Hanna, Kira, heelp!!" I called out as two familiar faces turned to look in my direction.

The one with the shiny green ring took one look at the movie sign they were trying to drag me into and ran over to release the clip holding Whitney's hair in place and she released my arm.

I was able to finally break free of their grip, because Aubrey loosened her grip when her very, very loud ringtone blurted out in the big room, attracting attention that had not already been there.

Kira, the ash blond girl, just stood where she was and rolled her eyes. "You guys are a bunch of crazy rolled up in one."

"Thanks, K..." we all said together with a sigh.

I sighed the loudest. "Please get me outta this..." I mouthed to Kira, the only girl who knew my one secret no one else knew.

Kira, the wisest and brightest of us all, gathered us up onto a nearby bench while Hanna went to go make a phone call (probably to escape the drama).

"Alright, you three, what's up?" Kira said in her special peacemaking voice (one she used particularly often).

All at once all three started talking, pointing at each other and the Hunger Games Movie.

Kira put her hand on her head then yelled, "All of you shut!!"

Immediately all of quieted, it was rare for K to yell at us (well at least not at this level, anyways).

In a pained voice, Kira pointed at me to start first (as she slowly recovered).

"It all started when Abi and I made a deal. Everyone should be able to know how both of us refused to read the first book of the other's favorite series, The 39 Clues and The Hunger Games. For our own reasons," I gave all of them a knowing look.

"Whitney, continue," Kira commanded, slowly turning back into herself.

Whitney made a face at me. "Well SOMEONE here faked up on me last week and said she liked the book. If both people like the book they can continue. If one doesn't they are both not qualified by the Book Deal to continue at all. Then Monday morning she said sorry she couldn't do it because it gave her nightmares," Whitney said with a "duh" sort of tone, making me wanna do something mean.

But Kira held me back with her secret glance, the one she had used when I told her everything. Aubrey had it on, too, when I texted her the detes and such.

Aubrey continued without hesitation. "So Whitney planned a sleepover with her and I to draw her to the movies without her knowing. I can show you the ropes we used in the car when Ms. Dalia dropped us off!"

"Aubrey!" Whitney said, betrayed.

Kira paused for a moment, quickly checking my face for all other info. "Why don't we just talk this over at Hanna's house? I doubt Ms. Drake would mind. The movie can wait for when she's ready."

Four of Us - In the Middle of Nowhere Preview

By: Cynthia Steven

In the middle of nowhere, out in the wilderness, up in their faces, and in the dead of night.

After a tragic accident, four best friends, the lucky, runaway survivors, are lost in the middle of nowhere. Starving, tired, and in deep depression of what they had seen, they think they can't survive. That is, until they realized they had something they never knew...

Ally Rylant: Random blogger who knows how to cheer up in the darkest of times. With her solar energy Blackberry, she believes all things are possible as the Youtube and Hunger Games expert. Loves grapes.

Alex Rylant: Cousin of Ally and has a wicked sense of humor. Slow to anger and slow to speak, she's the artist and gatherer of the group who had studied the stars and uses them for navigation. Gets bored easily and is know to temporarily steal Ally's solar iPod for amusement.

Marie Tyson: The spontaneous one. One with nature, the girl can summon a frog at any time, call a few mares to ride, and eagles even listen with pleas for help as a lookout. The quiet, "petite" peacemaker's favorite animal is a frog.

Livy Fine - The fashion advisor and inner geek. This girl sews natural materials together, making clothes for the whole team and rewarding every animal used with any pieces of saved food she carries around in her pack. With all Pokémon experience she carries, she's the team defender.

Will they ever find people again? What happens if they run into the enemy? Where IS their family, captive with the enemy?

Ally, Alex, Marie, and Livy must depend on each other to survive, one of the only choices they have left.
